How do I forward emails automatically in gmail?

If you would like to forward emails in your Gmail account to another email address you will need to add the destination address, and then authorise that address.

It makes sense, it ensures that the recipient is ok to receive those emails, otherwise you could easily spam people!

Generally this can be useful if you want to start forwarding emails from old @gmail.com accounts to your new Google Workspace email address.  However its important to note that trying this in reverse (from your Google Workspace account to @gmail for example) may be restricted by your administrator, for good reason.  Its important for a business to ensure it's emails are not being forwarded to external or third party systems without approval, so make sure to check in with your Workspace administrator before attempting this.

If you wish to only forward some emails please refer to our forwarding using rules article.

Here's a video to show you how to set this up:

Step by Step instructions:

  • Navigate to your GMail settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP in the account from which you want to forward the emails (the menu name or options available may look different in your Google Workspace)
  • In the Forwarding section click the "Add a forwarding address" button to add<yourdestinationemailaddress> you want to forward to
  • You will get an alert that "A confirmation link has been sent to <yourdestinationemailaddress> to verify permission."
  • You then need to go to the inbox of the <yourdestinationemailaddress> to verify and approve that you wish to receive these forwarded emails
  • Then go back to your original account, once approved you have the option of how you want the source emails to be handled once forwarded, click Save and your all done.
