Can you backup Google Chats?
Yes Google Chats can be backed up however please note the following current limitations:
- Chats can be backed up for selected Users or Google Groups, who must be members of the chat to enable backup
- Users direct messages are backed up as part of selecting the User
- Chat data will be added to your storage quota, so please check if adding chats that you have enough cloud backup storage quota to cover your chats, as attachments are stored in Drive they will be included in your Drive storage total.
- Chats at this stage cannot currently be restored to the chat tool, however they are easily exported to a HTML (including any attachments) which can be displayed in a browser. This screenshot shows an exported direct message between Chromebook Test and Jen:
